Embrace Your Summer Style

Summer is our favourite season. We love everything about it! The clothes, the food, the weather, the cottage, the patios, and especially, the jewelry! This is the perfect time to add in some pops of colour to your everyday wardrobe, whether you’re running errands, relaxing on the dock, or heading out for date night. It’s easy to incorporate some delicate summer layers, or bright and bold statement pieces to whatever your’re wearing! We’ve listed below, 3 easy and simple ways that you can change up your jewelry for the summer season.

Here are 3 tips for styling your jewelry for summer:

POP of colour!

Don’t be afraid of a little colour! Summer is the perfect time to add something fun to your wardrobe like our Fiesta necklace. This 18k gold plated fish tail chain with coloured enamel accents will look amazing with a crisp white dress, or paired with a crop top, your favourite jean shorts and a cute pair of sandals. If you’re used to wearing neutrals, this is the time to step out of your comfort zone. By adding colour with your accessories, you can easily add just the right amount of colour to any of your summer outfits!

Delicate layers

With all those cute summer dresses, and lower necklines, try layering your necklaces for more of a statement look. Use necklaces of different lengths and different styles. You want the necklace lengths to be 2 inches apart or more. Combine a plain chain with a pendant necklace (or 2!). We layered our Moonstone Sunrise necklace with the Boreal convertible choker/necklace and finished the look with the Evil Eye necklace.

The perfect stack

Summer is the perfect time to show off some arm candy! Stack those bracelets up! Don’t be afraid to mix gemstones and metals. For an easy way to stack your bracelets, remember the rule of 3. Odd numbers are always more esthetically appealing. Start off with a statement bracelet, then add a hematite stacker, then finish with a coordinating gemstone bracelet or diffuser bracelet. Voila! Your stack is complete!

The Best Crystals for Anxiety

The 3 Best Crystals for Anxiety

I recently shared a bit about my own mental health journey with anxiety for Bell Let’s Talk day. I have struggled my whole life with anxiety and after having my kids, it got worse. Today though, I can say that I am doing great. My anxiety is still there, but it is not overwhelming and I have the ongoing support of my husband, friends and family who are always checking in.

One of the first bracelets I ever made for myself, was specifically for anxiety. It was during a time, several years ago, that I was struggling the most, and so I started to look into crystals that were good for anxiety. That’s when I found lepidolite. It’s definitely not one of my best designs, but it means a lot to me, because it reminds me of how far I have come in my own mental health journey to whole body wellness.

Here, I will share the 3 best crystals for anxiety that you can start using today. You can get these crystals in many forms, like tumbles, towers, or raw chunks, or you can wear them in a piece of jewelry to easily benefit from their calming energy.

Lepidolite is a beautiful lilac grey to rosy colour and comes from the mica family of stones. It is a natural source of lithium which is known as a mood stabilizer and can help rebalance emotions. It has a soothing and calming energy. It is a great manifestation stone and helps bring more awareness to your feelings and allows you to acknowledge your anxiety in order to let it go. This is also a great crystal for improving sleep since it helps you to fall asleep more easily by calming your mind and thoughts.

Howlite is known as the calming stone. It is a chalky white colour with grey veining. It has a gentle vibration that is soft and soothing. This is a great stone to have in your home or wear in your jewelry as it can absorb stress and tension. Howlite can help improve patience and clear your mind.

Amethyst comes in a range of shades of purple and has a calming energy that can help relax your mind, body and spirit. It can help with sleep and meditation by quieting the mind. It helps to clear your head of negative energy and thoughts. Amethyst can also help develop your intuition and psychic ability as it is linked to the crown chakra and third eye.

Rock Paper Pretty Blog- Welcome

Welcome  to the Rock Paper Pretty Blog

“Jewelry has the power to be the one little thing that makes you feel unique.”

-Elizabeth Taylor

Hi! Welcome to the new Rock Paper Pretty blog page! I’m so glad you’re here. I plan on sharing lots of fun and informative posts on all things jewelry!

A little about me…

I’m a mom of 2 and a registered nurse with a love for family, nature, and all things jewelry! I’ve been making different types of jewelry over the years, but finally, started Rock Paper Pretty in 2019.

I love statement jewelry, but that’s not what you wear everyday. Rock Paper Pretty came about because I wanted pretty pieces that I could easily throw on with a t-shirt and jeans, or even a pair of scrubs!

Each piece is designed with that in mind- simple, elegant style, made for everyday life as a busy, working woman and mom.

I look forward to sharing with you, some more about me, my design process, inspiration and jewelry tips.

xo, Dana

Gold Filled Vs. Gold Plated

Gold Filled vs. Gold Plated Jewelry

by Dana Sobanski

What’s the difference?

You’ve heard the terms “gold plated” and “gold filled”, but what does it mean? And why does it matter?

It’s helpful to know the difference when you are buying a new piece of jewelry. Here, I will go through the differences of both, so the next time you are looking for a new necklace or pair of earrings, you can make an educated purchase.

There are several main differences, not just the price!

Mini Herkimer diamond with 14K gold filled chain

Apatite and Aquamarine sun with gold plated chain

All about gold filled.

  • Gold filled jewelry has a thick layer of real gold, heat bonded over a base metal.
  • Contains at least 5% real gold
  • Will not tarnish.
  • Very durable. Will last a lifetime if cared for.
  • Best for daily wear and meaningful, timeless gifts.

Because of the higher gold content in gold filled jewelry, it will also come with a higher price tag than gold plated jewelry. It is a great alternative and more economical option than solid gold.

Buy gold filled jewelry if you want your jewelry to last a long time and still look like new, and you want to wear it everyday.

All about gold plated.

  • Extremely thin layer of gold over brass or base metal
  • Contains only 0.05% real gold
  • Easily tarnishes
  • Not very durable. Gold plating will easily come off with regular wear, lotions, water and oil.
  • Best for occasional wear and more on trend styles.

Buy gold plated jewelry if the design is more trendy, and if you plan on only wearing it occasionally.

Typically costs less since there is less gold in gold plated jewelry.

Gold Filled vs. Gold Plated jewelry

Hopefully now, you will find it easier to decide between gold filled and gold plated jewelry. Both are great but depending on how much you plan on wearing your jewelry, as well as how long you want to have it looking like new, will ultimately determine which one is right for you!

Rock Paper Pretty’s jewelry is made with both options. Most of our gold necklaces and earrings are made with 14k gold filled. This is important to us since we want you to be able to wear your jewelry everyday! There are also a few styles using gold plated elements. You can shop our jewelry here.

So I’m curious, which do you prefer? Gold filled? Or gold plated?
