The Surprising and Romantic History of Rose Quartz

The Surprising and Romantic History of Rose Quartz

And Why It Deserves to be Called the Love Stone

Aah….It’s February.

The season of love and romance.

Everywhere you turn you see pink and red - which means nothing suits this month more than the Rose Quartz Stone.

Rose Quartz boasts its pale to medium pink colour in shades that range anywhere from a delicate pastel pink to a vibrant rose colour. On top of being one of the most beautiful and feminine stones, Rose Quartz has been linked to love and romance throughout history.

It’s no wonder it’s referred to as the “Love Stone".

Rose Quartz can be dated back to 7000 BC in Mesopotamia. It was originally crafted by the Assyrians around 800-600 BC. Not feeling the love in facts of history? Well here’s the romantic side and mythological origin of the Love Stone.

ROSE QUARTZ IN MYTHOLOGY

Let the romantic journey start in Greece.

Aphrodite, the well-known goddess of love and beauty, found herself in love with Adonis. Adonis was the mortal god of plants and rebirth. An unlikely pair you say? Maybe so, but they were still a love story for the ages. Aphrodite was obsessed with Adonis and she made it very clear.

She made it so clear, her former lover Ares took notice of the romance. Ares was the god of war, not someone to be trifled with. He was so overcome with jealousy that he hatched a murderous plan to get rid of Adonis. He came down to earth, took the form of a wild boar in the forest and attacked Adonis.

Aphrodite heard Adonis’ anguished cries and she swept down from heaven to rescue him. She was in such a hurry to reach him, that she cut herself on a briar bush. When she finally reached him, it was too late.

Poor Adonis died in Aphrodite’s arms. While she cradled his body, their blood fused together and fell upon a white quartz stone, staining it pink. The Rose Quartz was born.

So sad…..but we need a happy ending, yes? Feeling pity for the couple, Zeus brought Adonis back to life for 6 months a year for them to be reunited in true love. And the Rose Quartz stone? It became a symbol of reconciliation and undying love.

Next, Roman Mythology tells the tale of Eros, the god of desire, love and attraction - more commonly known as Cupid. Heard of him? Eros was said to have brought the pink Love Stone down from Olympus to spread love and romance around the Earth.

Finally, Egyptian Mythology tells us about Isis who is the goddess of life, motherhood and fertility. She used Rose Quartz to maintain her youth and beauty. She is said to have rubbed the stone on her cheeks and eyes to prevent wrinkles.

We’re not 100% sure that would work, so we don’t recommend giving that a try.

However, there are a number of benefits that to this day are believed to be associated with Rose Quartz.
